Hand-arm vibration calculator

Combine actual trigger times and representative vibration magnitudes for the tools used during a day.

Enter your values

Check this tool fits your task

Use frequency-weighted vibration total values in m/s², not a single uncombined axis or a guess from tool power. The result depends on representative inputs and a complete task inventory.

Add each tool or process. Time means actual vibration exposure/trigger time, not the whole shift with the tool present.

Up to 12 non-overlapping periods. Use whole hours and minutes.

How to use this tool

  1. Check the scope and collect measured or verified input values.
  2. Enter values using the displayed units, then calculate.
  3. Read the result, calculation breakdown and next steps together.
Worked example

5 m/s² for 2 hours plus 2.5 m/s² for 2 hours → A(8) 2.80 m/s² and 125 exposure points, above the GB action value.

The example button fills illustrative values. Where a scope confirmation is shown, check it yourself before calculating.

Method and references

A(8) = √[Σ(a² × exposure hours) ÷ 8]. Exposure points = 16 × A(8)². GB EAV: 2.5 m/s² / 100 points; ELV: 5 m/s² / 400 points.

Use frequency-weighted vibration total values in m/s², not a single uncombined axis or a guess from tool power. The result depends on representative inputs and a complete task inventory.

Common questions

Do I enter the shift length?

Enter actual exposure time for each tool; include all vibrating activities during the day.

Can I use the manufacturer’s number directly?

Check that it represents your actual task and conditions; declared emission figures may not represent workplace exposure.

Is below 100 points risk-free?

No. Lower exposure does not establish no risk; review controls, input quality and individual circumstances.
