Use only with manufacturer instructions that specify this additive method and the same reference surface. Not a universal lanyard or self-retracting lifeline calculator. No equipment values are assumed.

From the selected system’s instructions and anchor geometry.
Use the maximum required by your equipment instructions.
Use the manufacturer’s required term, on the same reference basis.
Include relevant anchor deflection or extensions once; enter 0 only if justified.
Obtain from the selected instructions; must be greater than 0.
Measured to the first obstruction from the same reference surface.

How to use this tool

  1. Check the scope and collect measured or verified input values.
  2. Enter values using the displayed units, then calculate.
  3. Read the result, calculation breakdown and next steps together.
Worked example

Fictional worksheet: 1.8 + 1.2 + 0.5 + 0.3 + 1 = 4.8 m. Available 4 m → 0.8 m shortfall. These values are not equipment recommendations.

The example button fills illustrative values. Where a scope confirmation is shown, check it yourself before calculating.

Method and references

Required clearance = free fall + deceleration + harness/body allowance + other allowances + safety margin. Difference = available clearance − required clearance.

Common questions

Can I use this with any SRL?

No. Many systems require product-specific charts or different geometry. Use that method directly when it differs from this worksheet.

Does surplus clearance mean safe?

No. It only compares the values entered. Swing fall, anchor position, equipment compatibility, obstacles and rescue still need checking.

Which surface do I measure from?

Use the reference surface defined in your selected equipment instructions for every term and available clearance; do not mix anchor-level and working-surface methods.
